The ledger

Fragrance

Added scent is the most common complaint from sensitive guests, and the hardest thing to see on a booking page.

  1. No added fragrance in rooms

    Not yet reviewed.

So far, a 2018 report says: In 2018 the trade press reported that nights at Lanserhof are ‘completed with biological aromatherapy by Nacht’.

Our note. The article does not say whether scent is used in guest rooms, and it is several years old. Ask whether aromatherapy is part of the evening routine and decline it if you prefer.

    How we know

What we look for. No air fresheners, plug-ins, room sprays or diffusers used in guest rooms.

Why it matters. In a US population survey, about a third of adults reported health problems, such as migraine and breathing difficulty, from fragranced products. Terpenes in many fragrances also react with indoor ozone to form fine particles and formaldehyde.

Sources: Steinemann, Air Quality, Atmosphere & Health, Fragranced consumer products: exposures and effects from emissions (); Nazaroff & Weschler, Atmospheric Environment, Cleaning products and air fresheners: exposure to primary and secondary air pollutants ()

Air

What you breathe for eight hours a night: smoke history, fresh air, filtration and anything burning in the room.

  1. Smoke-free property

    Not yet reviewed.

  2. Opening windows

    Hotel-reportedacross the property

The hotel says: Every room and suite listed has a balcony-terrace, and the Pavillon Suite a roof terrace.

Our note. We read a terrace as a door that opens to outside air.

    How we know

What we look for. Guest rooms have windows or doors that open to outside air.

Why it matters. The US EPA lists opening windows, when outdoor air allows, as a way to dilute pollutants released indoors. An opening window lets guests air a room themselves when it smells of cleaning products or new furnishings.

Source 2: Hotel website: rooms and suitesUndated · read 22 Oct 2026

  3. Filtered fresh air

    Not yet reviewed.

So far, the hotel said in 2022: Lanserhof says a cross-flow heat exchanger uses the exhaust air to warm the incoming fresh air, so the air stays fresh without wasting energy.

Our note. Filter ratings are not stated, so this falls short of the criterion.

    How we know

What we look for. Mechanical ventilation brings outdoor air in through filters rated MERV 13 or better.

Why it matters. Fine particles (PM2.5) are linked to respiratory and cardiovascular harm. A MERV 13 filter captures at least half of the smallest particles it is rated for and most larger ones, and a steady supply of fresh air dilutes pollutants released indoors.

Source: US EPA, What is a MERV rating? ()

    Source 3: Lanserhof press release: sustainability (German)9 Mar 2022 · read 22 Oct 2026

  4. In-room air purifier

    Not yet reviewed.

  5. No in-room combustion

Not metin some rooms or areas

The hotel says: The Elysium Duo Suite lists a living room ‘with open fireplace’; the Elysium Loft, Infinitas and Somnium suites list one too.

Our note. The fuel is not stated. The Pavillon Suite lists a steam fireplace. The Double Room, Parvus and Symphonia suites list no fireplace; book one of those if this matters to you.

    How we know

What we look for. No gas fireplaces, candles or incense in guest rooms.

Why it matters. In homes with gas appliances, the US EPA notes that indoor nitrogen dioxide often exceeds outdoor levels, and that it irritates the eyes, nose, throat and airways. Candles and incense burn in the same small, closed room.

Cleaning & care

How a room is cleaned, treated and prepared, and whether a request for a gentler clean is actually honored.

  1. Low-chemical housekeeping

    Not yet reviewed.

So far, the hotel said in 2022: Lanserhof follows a ‘Green Cleaning Concept’ of fully ecological cleaning with dry micro-steam and no chemical cleaning agents.

Our note. This is a group-wide statement from 2022. No product list is published, so this falls short of the criterion. Ask what is used for disinfection.

    How we know

What we look for. Unscented, low-hazard cleaning products and no aerosols, with a product list the hotel will share.

Why it matters. In a ten-country study, weekly use of household cleaning sprays was linked to new asthma symptoms in adults. Residue and scent from cleaning also linger for the next guest.

Source: Zock et al., American Journal of Respiratory and Critical Care Medicine, The use of household cleaning sprays and adult asthma: an international longitudinal study ()

Sleep & materials

The textiles, mattress and floor you spend the night closest to, and how allergen-aware the room is.

  1. Tested or organic bed linen

    Not yet reviewed.

  2. Mattress materials disclosed

    Not yet reviewed.

So far, a 2018 report says: In 2018 two suites were reported to have FreshBeds, with a silent unit in the base that filters surrounding air and delivers it through the mattress.

Our note. Mattress materials and flame-retardancy are not stated.

    How we know

What we look for. The hotel says what its mattresses are made of and how flame-retardancy is achieved.

Why it matters. Flame retardants have been added to mattresses and seating foam, and the US National Institute of Environmental Health Sciences lists possible effects including endocrine and thyroid disruption. How much a mattress adds to anyone’s exposure is still debated; disclosure lets guests choose.

Source: US National Institute of Environmental Health Sciences, Flame retardants (undated)

  3. Hard floors

    Hotel-reportedonly some rooms or areas

The hotel says: The pages for the Double Room and the Elysium Duo, Elysium Loft, Infinitas, Parvus, Somnium and Symphonia suites each list parquet.

Our note. The Pavillon Suite page does not mention its floors.

    How we know

What we look for. Hard, cleanable floors in guest rooms rather than wall-to-wall carpet.

Why it matters. Dust mites live in carpet, and US health guidance for allergic sleepers is to replace wall-to-wall carpet in bedrooms with bare floors, which can be cleaned completely between guests.

Water & pools

Drinking water, shower water and pool air.

  1. Filtered or tested drinking water

    Not yet reviewed.

  2. Water safety plan

    Not yet reviewed.

  3. Shower filters

    Not yet reviewed.

    Shown for information; not scored.

  4. Outdoor or low-chloramine pools

    Not yet reviewed.

So far, the hotel said in 2022: Lanserhof says it cleans its pool water with its own ultrafiltration system.

Our note. Whether the pool is indoors, how it is ventilated and whether combined chlorine is monitored are not stated.

    Shown for information; not scored.

    How we know

What we look for. Pools are outdoors, or indoor pools have dedicated ventilation and monitored combined chlorine.

Why it matters. Chloramines irritate the skin, eyes and airways, and they build up in the air of indoor pools without enough ventilation. Outdoor pools, and good ventilation for indoor ones, keep levels low.

Source: US CDC, Chloramines and pool operation ()

    Source 3: Lanserhof press release: sustainability (German)9 Mar 2022 · read 22 Oct 2026

Context, not scored: almost every pool in this catalog is outdoors, so it says little about one hotel against another.

Food

Allergen care first; where the produce comes from second.

  1. Allergen-aware kitchen

    Not yet reviewed.

  2. Garden or organic produce

    Hotel-reportedacross the property

The hotel said in 2022: ‘All our food is certified organic’, sourced from local suppliers where possible, with vegan options chosen where possible.

Our note. This is a group-wide statement from 2022.

    Shown for information; not scored.

    How we know

What we look for. A meaningful share of the kitchen’s produce is grown on site or certified organic.

Why it matters. A large review found detectable pesticide residues about four times as often in conventional crops as in organic ones. Over a short stay the difference in exposure is small, so we show this as a note on the kitchen, not a scored health factor.

Source: Barański et al., British Journal of Nutrition, Higher antioxidant and lower cadmium concentrations and lower incidence of pesticide residues in organically grown crops: a systematic literature review and meta-analyses ()

    Source 3: Lanserhof press release: sustainability (German)9 Mar 2022 · read 22 Oct 2026

Light & quiet

Darkness and silence at night, and radio-quiet options for guests who want them.

  1. Darkness and quiet

    Not yet reviewed.

So far, the project architect lists: Sliding shutters with fine wooden louvres give the loggias privacy and solar shading; Müller-BBM advised on acoustics.

Our note. Blackout and sound insulation in the bedrooms are not described.

    How we know

What we look for. Blackout shades and sound insulation that let the room become properly dark and quiet.

Why it matters. Night-time noise fragments sleep; the WHO’s night noise guidelines set a target of 40 dB outside the bedroom. A dark, quiet room is the simplest sleep aid there is.

Source: WHO Regional Office for Europe, Night noise guidelines for Europe ()

Source 5: Christoph Ingenhoven Architects: project pageUndated · read 22 Oct 2026

  2. Radio-quiet options

    Hotel-reportedacross the property

The hotel says: The Double Room and every suite page list an ‘electrosmog switch’ or ‘electrosmog filter’. In 2018 the trade press described it as a button that switches off the room’s Wi-Fi with one click.

Our note. Listed as an amenity, not a health benefit.

    Shown for information; not scored.

    How we know

What we look for. Wi-Fi that can be switched off in the room, or a wired connection. Listed as an amenity only.

Why it matters. Some guests prefer lower radio exposure. The WHO says current evidence does not confirm any health effects from low-level electromagnetic fields, so we list these options as amenities, not as health benefits.

Source: World Health Organization, Radiation: electromagnetic fields ()

Source 6: Hotel website: Double RoomUndated · read 22 Oct 2026

Not part of any health score. Shown as an amenity at the guest’s preference.

Building

The materials a hotel was built and renovated with, how it handles damp, and what third parties have certified.

  1. Low-emitting materials

    Not yet reviewed.

So far, the hotel said in 2022: Lanserhof says it uses only emission-free materials approved by building biologists, with a focus on wood and natural paints.

Our note. Adhesives and flooring are not described one by one, so this falls short of the criterion.

    How we know

What we look for. Low-VOC paints, adhesives, finishes and flooring specified in construction or renovation.

Why it matters. Paints, varnishes and adhesives release volatile organic compounds, formaldehyde among them, most heavily when new. Low-emitting products reduce that load.

Source: US EPA, Volatile organic compounds’ impact on indoor air quality ()

    Source 3: Lanserhof press release: sustainability (German)9 Mar 2022 · read 22 Oct 2026

  2. Leak and mold response

    Not yet reviewed.

  3. Building certification

    Not yet reviewed.

So far, the project architect lists: The architects say all choices were made according to the criteria of the German Sustainable Building Council (DGNB), with Baubiologie Maes as building-biology consultant.

Our note. Working to DGNB criteria is not the same as holding a DGNB certificate, and we have not found one.

    Shown for information; not scored.

    How we know

What we look for. A third-party certification such as WELL, LEED or a green business program, recorded with its level, and its year where the certifier gives one.

Why it matters. WELL assesses air, water and light in occupied buildings. LEED and green business programs are mainly environmental, with some indoor-quality elements. A certificate records what was designed or checked at a point in time, not what a room is like today.

Source 5: Christoph Ingenhoven Architects: project pageUndated · read 22 Oct 2026

Context only. A certificate supports specific criteria only where its scope covers them.
